Description

Licab XL 400 mg is an extended-release tablet of lithium carbonate produced by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd. It stabilizes neurotransmitter balance in the brain, reducing extreme mood shifts within 1–3 weeks of initiation. 

Precautions 

  •     Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Generally contraindicated; lithium has teratogenic potential, especially during the first trimester, and may pass into breast milk. If required, must be closely managed by a physician.

  •     Renal, Thyroid & Cardiac Function: Regular monitoring required. Avoid use in severe kidney disease, uncontrolled thyroid disorders, Brugada syndrome, or heart failure.

  •     Hydration & Salt Intake: Maintain hydration and normal sodium intake to avoid lithium concentration fluctuations. Avoid dehydration, hot weather, sweating, or dietary changes without consulting a doctor.

  •     Driving & Machinery: Use with caution; may cause dizziness or drowsiness.

  •     Pediatrics: Not recommended for children.

  •     Geriatric Patients: Use cautiously in those over 65 with impaired organ function.

  •     Allergy: Do not use if allergic to lithium carbonate.

Licab XL is prescribed for:

  •     Acute mania: to manage symptoms like over-activity, high energy, impulsivity, irritability.
  •     Bipolar disorder (maintenance): to reduce frequency and severity of manic and depressive episodes. 

Side Effects

Common / Mild

  •     Hand tremors, increased thirst/urination, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, rash, blurred vision, weight gain, headache, confusion, memory issues, dry mouth, polyuria.

Serious / Severe

  •     Heart rhythm disturbances, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (fever, muscle stiffness), rhabdomyolysis, cognitive impairment, low sodium (hyponatremia), signs of lithium toxicity (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, muscle weakness/twitching, coordination issues, tinnitus).
  •     Lithium-specific risks: hypothyroidism, nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, kidney damage, pseudotumor cerebri (raised intracranial pressure), potential teratogenicity.

  •   Other interactions: caffeine, certain antidepressants, anticonvulsants (e.g., carbamazepine), SGLT2 inhibitors, tramadol, theophylline, St. John's Wort, MAOIs, etc.
