Fildena (Sildenafil) Overview

Fildena (sildenafil) is a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It comes in various forms: oral tablet, oral suspension (liquid), and injection administered by a doctor.

What is Fildena?

• Fildena is available in tablet and suspension forms, taken by mouth, and an IV form administered by a doctor.
• Brand names: Viagra (for ED) and Revatio (for PAH).
• Generic versions are typically less expensive than brand-name drugs.

Uses of Fildena:

• Viagra: Treats ED by helping to achieve and maintain an erection.
• Revatio: Treats PAH by reducing high blood pressure in the lungs and improving exercise ability.

How Fildena Works:

• For ED: Increases blood flow to the penis during sexual arousal.
• For PAH: Relaxes lung muscles and opens blood vessels, lowering lung blood pressure.

How to Use Fildena:

• Timing: Take 30 minutes to 4 hours before sexual activity, ideally within an hour.
• Frequency: Do not exceed one dose per 24 hours.
• With Food: Can be taken with or without food, but high-fat meals may slow effectiveness.

Side Effects of Fildena:

• Common Side Effects: Nosebleeds, headaches, upset stomach, flushing, trouble sleeping, fever, prolonged erection, respiratory infection, nausea, vomiting, bronchitis, sore throat, runny nose.
• Serious Side Effects: Low blood pressure, shortness of breath, priapism (erection lasting more than 4 hours), vision or hearing loss, heart problems (heart attack, stroke, irregular heart rate).

Important Warnings:

• Priapism: Seek immediate medical help if an erection lasts more than 4 hours.
• Vision Loss: Stop taking Fildena and call your doctor if you experience sudden vision loss.
• Hearing Loss: Stop taking Fildena and contact your doctor if you experience sudden hearing loss or tinnitus.
• Use in Children: Generally, not recommended unless specified by a doctor.

Drug Interactions:

• Avoid with: Nitrates (e.g., isosorbide mononitrate, nitroglycerin) and guanylate cyclase stimulators (e.g., riociguat) due to dangerous drops in blood pressure.
