Uses

Dorzolamide is used as an adjuvant therapy (to beta-blockers) or as monotherapy (in patients non responsive to beta-blockers or in whom beta-blockers are contraindicated) to treat elevated intraocular pressure (increased fluid pressure inside the eye) in patients with ocular hypertension, open-angle glaucoma, or pseudo-exfoliative glaucoma (clogging due to flaky dandruff-like material that peels off the outer layer of the lens of the eye, raises pressure in the eye).

How it works

Dorzolamide belongs to a class of medications called carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.  It works by inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase thereby causing a reduction in the fluid pressure in the eye.

Nausea, Burning and stinging of the eyes, Sore eye and blurred vision, Conjunctivitis, And fatigue., Bitter taste, Headache, Irritation/ inflammation of the eyelid

Timolol(2%)

Uses

Timolol is used to treat high blood pressure, stabilize irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), prevent angina (heart pain) and improve survival chances post heart attack. It is also used to treat glaucoma, a condition wherein there is an increased pressure in the eye and this may lead to blindness. It is also used to treat headaches due to migraine.

How it works

Timolol belongs to a beta-blockers class of medication. It relaxes the blood vessels and reduced the blood pressure. It makes heart relax and pump blood at a slower rate for heart attack patients. In eye, it decreases fluid production and thus decreases pressure.

Decrease in blood pressure, Dry eyes or discharge from eyes, Feelings of depression, Sensitivity to light, Blurring of vision, Impotence, Worsening of heart failure, Shortness of breath, Nausea, Irritation and pain in the eye, Heart blocks, Skin rash, Vomiting, Common: for tablet-weakness, Low blood pressure, Abnormal tingling, Breathlessness such as in asthma, Constipation, Numbness or pain over any area of the skin, Diarrhea, Dizziness, Abnormal sensation in eye or crusting in eyelids, Cramp like pain on walking, Swollen hands or feet.for eye drops-blurred vision, Inflammation in the eye, Sleeping difficulties or cough., Headache, Decrease in ability to urinate.for eye drops-erosion of the cornea, Itchiness, Change in taste.uncommon: for tablet- slow heartbeat

Expert advice

Do not drive or operate machinery as you may feel dizziness and have visual disturbances.

Do not use dorzolamide eye drops while you are wearing contact lenses. Do not use contact lenses for at least 10-15 minutes after using dorzolamide in the eye.

If more than one topical ophthalmic drug is being used, the drugs should be administered at least ten minutes apart.

Do not use dorzolamide for acute angle-closure glaucoma.

Tell your doctor if you are or planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
