What is Mebendazole?

Mebendazole is an anthelmintic or anti-worm medication. It is used to prevent newly hatched insect larvae (patristic worms) from growing or multiplying in your body. It is prescribed primarily for the treatment of infections caused by worms such as whipworm, pinworm, roundworm, and hookworm. This medication may be used to treat infections caused by more than one of these parasites at the same time.
Mebendazole is sold under various trade names, a couple of which are Vermox and Mebex (made by Cipla). This medication may also be prescribed for conditions not mentioned here.

Pinworm infections spread from one person to another easily, especially with close contact. Take extra care while handling clothes, linen, and towels of infected person in the house and ensure that they are washed everyday as well as not shared by non infected people. You should properly disinfect the house to minimize the possibility of pinworm infestation.
Mebendazole is a pregnancy category C drug. It is not known whether it can harm an unborn baby if taken while being pregnant. You must not take this medication if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without first asking your doctor. How should I take Mebendazole?

Take Mebendazole (Vermox, Mebex) strictly according to your doctor’s direction or according to the instructions on the medication label. Do not alter the dosage unless your doctor advises you to do so. Take Mebendazole with food. If you have difficulty in swallowing a tablet, you may chew or crush the tablet and then swallow with a glass of water.
It may take about 3 days after starting the treatment for the worms to be purged from your stomach and intestines. The time to clear the body of worms also depends of how susceptible the worm is to Mebendazole, and how quickly one’s digestive system is functioning. Fasting, laxatives, and purging will not remove the worms from the body. Always store Mebendazole in a cool and dry place.
