How it works
Estrogens diffuse into their target cells and interact with a protein receptor. Target cells include the female reproductive tract, the mammary gland, the hypothalamus, and the pituitary. Estrogens increase the hepatic synthesis of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), thyroid-binding globulin (TBG), and other serum proteins and suppress follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the anterior pituitary.
Dosage and Administration
Lynoral (Ethinylestradiol) is usually taken by mouth with food or milk either every day or on a cyclical basis: once a day for 21 days and then none for 7 days; then the cycle is repeated. However, for treating cancer it usually is taken three times a day every day for at least 3 months.
Common side effects
Oedema, weight gain/loss, thromboembolism, nausea, cholestatic jaundice, mental depression, vomiting, increased tendency for vag candidiasis, fluid retention, increased appetite, hypertension, alteration in libido., dizziness, disturbance of menstrual cycle, discomfort in breast, headache
Precautions
If you become pregnant while taking estrogen, call your physician immediately. If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the physician or dentist that you are taking estrogen.
Tell your physician if you use tobacco products. Cigarette smoking may decrease the effectiveness of this drug. Tell your physician and pharmacist if you wear contact lenses.
