What is Amiodarone?

Amiodarone is used to treat an arrhythmic condition (condition in which rhythm of heartbeats is affected). It is also known as an antiarrhythmic drug. Amiodarone is used to maintain proper heartbeat in people suffering with life threatening heart rhythm disorders of the ventricles. Ventricles are lower chambers of the heart that throw blood out of the heart. This medication is given for treatment of ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia. Amiodarone may also be advised for causes not mentioned above.

Important Information about Amiodarone

Amiodarone has a high potential to cause side effects that can be fatal. Hence, the first few doses are given under medical supervision, preferably in a hospital setting. Also Amiodarone is only given in life threatening situations. Do not take Amiodarone if you are allergic to it or iodine. This medication is not recommended if you have some heart disorder like ‘AV block’ or a history of slow heartbeats. Amiodarone belongs to FDA pregnancy category D. It can be harmful during pregnancy and can be detrimental to an unborn baby. So let your doctor know if you are pregnant and don’t take this medication without his or her advice.
