A migraine is a severe and painful headache. They can be preceded or followed by sensory warning signs, such as tingling in the arms and legs, nausea, vomiting, flashes of light, blind spots and increased sensitivity to light and sound. The excruciating pain that migraines bring can last for hours or even days; migraines are a common problem in the United States. Migraines can be anticipated by an aura of sensory disturbances followed by a severe, often one-sided headache. According to the American Migraine Association, they affect 36 million Americans; that's about 12 percent of the population. The cause tends to affect people aged 15-55 and is still unknown.

Causes of a Migraine:-

Though migraine causes aren't understood, genetics and environmental factors appear to play a role. Migraines may be caused by changes in the brainstem and its interactions with the trigeminal nerve, a major pain pathway. Imbalances in brain chemicals including serotonin, which helps supervise pain in your nervous system also may be involved. Researchers are still studying the role of serotonin in migraines.Serotonin levels drop during migraine attacks. This may cause your trigeminal nerve to release substances called neuropeptides, which travel to your brain's outer covering (meninges). The result is migraine pain. Other neurotransmitters play a role in the pain of a migraine and calcitonin gene-related peptide.

Symptoms of a Migraine:-

  • Throbbing, pulsating pain
  • Light sensitivity
  • Sound sensitivity
  • Nausea
  • Pain on one side
  • Vision changes, blurred vision
  • Aura
  • Vomiting

Prevention of a Migraine:-

One of the best ways of preventing migraines is recognizing the things that trigger an attack and trying to avoid them. You may control a migraine by noticing a migraine after eating certain foods or when you're stressed and by avoiding this, you can control a migraine.Keeping a migraine diary can help you identify possible triggers and monitor how well any medication you're taking is working.

In your migraine diary, try to record:

  • the date of the attack
  • the time of day the attack began
  • any warning signs
  • your symptoms (including the presence or absence of aura)
  • what medication you took
  • when the attack ended
